![]() ![]() The twins were unaware of the presence of their co-twins as they claim arteries and veins as theirs and they wind up with both using some of the same placental vessels.įigure 2. These connecting vessels (also called chorioangiopagous vessels) probably occur by chance as the twins developed their individual placenta circulations in early pregnancy to provide them with vital nutrients from their mother. Over 95% of MC twins have blood vessels in their shared placenta that connect their circulations (see Figure 2). Monochorionic Placental Blood Vessel Connections Twinning within the first four days results in separate (dichorionic) placentas, after four days a shared (monochorionic) placenta with separate (diamnionic) bags of water, and after eight days the twins will share the placenta and water bag (monoamnionic). The type of placenta in identical twins is determined by when the twinning process occurs in the first two weeks of pregnancy. ![]() ![]() Twinning within the first four days results in dichorionic or separate placentas similar to those found in fraternal twins (see Figure 1).įigure 1. The type of placenta is determined by when, in days, the embryo randomly splits into twins following the fertilization of the egg (conception). Identical twins may either have their own separate placentas or they may share a common placenta. The impetus for and the timing of the embryo to split into identical twins is unknown, but the later this occurs the more complications are seen. The type of placenta nurturing identical twins plays a significant role in the development of complications in multiple gestation. The foundation of everything you need to know starts with the placenta. Not, because a doctor told you, but because you understood the answers to the questions that you asked and had the measurements. These are the first steps to being prepared to fight for your medical care and babies if you need to and be able to truly celebrate knowing that these conditions have been ruled out. However, if you do see signs of TTTS, you are going to be empowered and have a medical plan in place to give your babies immediate care with the top specialist in the country. Once you know what to ask, you can truly be free to enjoy your pregnancy every time your ultrasound rules out TTTS, including TAPS, SIUGR or TRAP. If you have fears, concerns, doubts, the best way to fight back is to understand that your imagination is 100% worse than the truth.
